Steven Matis

Funeral Director/Manager, N.J. Lic. No. 4129

I began my career in funeral service in 1987, working part-time for several funeral homes in the surrounding communities where I grew up in northern New Jersey. I continued working in various capacities during my college career, including in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I attended mortuary school. I am a 1993 graduate of The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, graduating with a bachelor’s degree. I became a licensed funeral director in 1994. I began my career in Ocean County, working and managing funeral homes in Toms River, Lakewood, and Manahawkin. In 2005, my wife, Heather, and I moved to Galloway Township while working in Ocean County. In 2010, we continued family ownership of Parsels Funeral Home by purchasing the funeral home from Heather’s parents.

As residents of Absecon, we enjoy living and participating in the community events our community and surrounding communities have to offer. As well, I and my family are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Absecon.

Currently, I am a member of :

  • The New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association
  • The National Funeral Director Association
  • The Rotary Club of Absecon and Galloway Township

Through the funeral home, I am honored to be a member of:

Heather L. Matis

Office Manager

I grew up in the funeral business as my father, Larry Scott, was a long-time funeral director and previous owner at Parsels Funeral Home. I started my work with Parsels in 1998, handling the administrative duties. In 2001, I transferred to a position within the company which owned Parsels at the time. My new position led me to be in charge of accounts receivable for all New Jersey funeral homes owned by the company and I handled numerous special projects, primarily in New Jersey and New York.  I left the funeral industry in 2004 and began working in the financial sector, again in administrative positions and eventually earning positions as assistant to financial advisors. I worked in the financial industry until 2012, when I joined Steven, my husband, working in the day-to-day operations of Parsels Funeral Home. I enjoy working with families in a supportive role, assisting them in making each funeral a personalized and lasting memory for each family we serve.

In my free time, I am involved with community groups that provide information to the public about senior living and the resources available to our community as a whole. I also enjoy volunteering at my daughter’s school, Assumption Regional Catholic School, on several fund-raising projects. I spend numerous hours with my daughter, Alexandra, as she competes on a local dance team. This includes being present for dance practices and competitions, fund-raising, costume preparation, and supporting all the dancers on Alexandra’s team.

I am not a licensed funeral director and am not qualified to make arrangements, embalm or conduct funerals.
