Marguerite S. Merrill

Marguerite S. Merrill, 98, of Absecon, passed away July 18, 2025. Marguerite was born April 15, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to Irene and Reinhold Glassman. She was the oldest of three daughters, Ruth, Dorothy and herself. They spent their younger years in Philly before moving to Ocean City, NJ where they spent most of their time by the ocean and walking the boardwalk.

Marguerite’s first job was working side by side with her father in his bakery on Asbury Ave. in Ocean City. She later worked as a switchboard operator for NJ Bell Telephone Co. She eventually met the love of her life, Arthur E. Merrill, married in 1961 and had two beautiful children, their son, Arthur E. Merrill, III and their daughter, Karen Merrill (Foss). Marguerite and her husband successfully launched a business called Art Merrill Marine and worked side by side for many years. After some time she eventually retired to help take care of family at home.

Marguerite touched the lives of many with warmth, creativity, curiosity and gregarious, outgoing nature. She was a generous friend and possessed an uncanny ability to connect to just about anyone. She possessed an empathetic heart and rare gift of building community wherever she found herself.

Remaining to cherish Marguerite’s memory are her children, Karen (Guy) Foss and Arthur (Debra) Merrill, III; grandchildren, Jamie and Kristen; great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Rose; nieces and nephews, Sue Brandon, Bill Class, Dennis Brandon and Sam Brandon.

Preceding Marguerite in death are her spouse, Arthur E. Merrill, Sr.; her parents, Irene (Matchner) and Reinhold Glassman; and her sisters, Ruth Class and Dottie Brandon.

A private service will be held to honor Marguerite’s memory.
