Herbert (Herbie) Burke Stephens

Herbert Burke Stephens, lovingly known as Herbie or Herb, passed away passed away in the early morning of June 16, 2026, at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, in Pomona, New Jersey. He was 59 years old.

Herbie's passing followed a prolonged and courageous battle with multiple forms of cancer. Though his health challenges were significant, he faced them with the same quiet determination that defined much of his life.

Born on August 28, 1966, in Salisbury, Maryland, Herbie was raised in Selbyville, Delaware, alongside his three brothers. Growing up on the Delmarva Peninsula helped shape his appreciation for hard work, family, and perseverance. Throughout much of his adult life, he worked in residential and commercial construction, taking pride in building and creating with his hands. He was a man who understood the value of honest labor and who approached life's responsibilities with dedication and resolve.

Those closest to Herbie knew him as a man of guarded emotions but deep loyalty. He was not always one to speak at length about his feelings, yet his care for others was often expressed through his actions rather than words. Beneath his reserved nature was a quick wit and an appreciation for humor that could emerge unexpectedly and bring a smile to those around him.

Herbie's life was not without hardship. He faced personal challenges, losses, and health struggles that would have tested anyone's spirit. Yet through each season of life, he continued forward with resilience and determination. His story was one of endurance, humility, and the quiet courage found in simply refusing to give up.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Hugh and Florence Belle Stephens and John Hilbert and Catherine (Quillen) Stuller Sr.; his father, Herbert Curtis Stephens; his brother, Loren Alan Stephens; and his son, William Herbert Stephens.

He leaves behind his mother, Betty Louise Stephens of Selbyville, Delaware; his brothers, Hugh David Stephens of Selbyville and Thomas Lee Stephens of Dothan, Alabama; ex-wife Michelle Howard of Hatfield, Pennsylvania; spiritually adopted children Timmothy Howard of Frankford, Delaware, and Ashley and Kate Huynh of Clearwater, Florida; as well as many extended family members and cherished friends.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and to the many friends and loved ones who offered support, kindness, and encouragement during Herbie's illness.

Herbie will be cremated, and his ashes will be held for future interment at Redmen Cemetery in Selbyville, Delaware.

Though gone from our sight, his memory remains in the hearts of those who knew him, loved him, and will carry his story forward. May he find peace, rest, and reunion with those who have gone before him.
