Memorial Service Planning

At a memorial service, there is no casket present, however, an urn may be on display for guests to observe and pay respect at. Memorial services can be held after a funeral or in place of a funeral altogether.

The memorial service may be held weeks or months after death. This time is used to plan the memorial service. At Parsels Funeral Home, we understand that memorial services can take more creativity and time to put together so we intend to accommodate you and your family’s needs. As you plan the memorial service, ask yourself these essential questions:

  1. What were my loved one’s interests or hobbies?
  2. What made them stand out as an individual?
  3. Did their profession or career shape their life?
  4. What were my loved one’s spiritual or religious beliefs?
  5. How can I incorporate my loved ones’ culture or ethnic heritage?

Using the above questions as a guide, we will help plan the perfect ceremony.

Memorial Services FAQ

What makes a celebration of life ceremony different from a traditional funeral?

A celebration of life ceremony typically takes at a later date, weeks or months after death, while a traditional funeral takes place shortly after death. The celebration of life can be more creative since there is more time to plan the event. The traditional funeral usually has a casket present while a celebration of life takes place after burial or cremation services have taken place.

How much does a memorial service cost?

There is no straight answer for how much the memorial service will cost. This all depends on the special features you select at the arrangement conference. At the arrangement conference, the funeral director will go over all service costs with you. You will receive a copy of our firm’s General Price List which details the essential professional services and ancillary products you’ve selected. Give us a call if you have any questions regarding the costs of memorial services.

What do I need to bring to the funeral home?

Please bring any documents or information required to complete your loved one’s death certificate and obituary to the arrangement conference. Other materials depend on the type of service you are planning. You can bring photographs, videos, and decorations for the service when it is time. Your funeral director can provide you with an exact list of the things they should like you to bring along to the arrangement conference.

What does a civil celebrant do?

A civil celebrant is a master of ceremony who has been trained to conduct formal ceremonies, such as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. They are not clergy and therefore can assist even if you or your loved one was not religious. If you choose to work with a celebrant, they will work with you to create a ceremony that reflects the beliefs, cultural background, values, and aspirations of your deceased loved one. Reach out to your funeral director if you are interested in receiving services from a civil celebrant.

Who will write the obituary?

You and your family are welcome to write the obituary if you so choose, however they are not necessary! An obituary is one of the most common ways to inform others of your loved one’s passing and can detail when a service is taking place. If you need aid in creating an obituary, please contact us.

Are there any “extra” fees or charges that will I need to pay?

At your arrangement conference, your funeral director will discuss fees from outside vendors. Some of these charges may include:

  • Fee charged by a newspaper to print an obituary
  • Clergy fee
  • Musician fee
  • Floral arrangements
  • Reception catering
  • Facility rental
