Cremation Service Planning

The first step in making funeral arrangements is deciding whether your loved one will have a body burial or be cremated. This decision may have already been made by the deceased prior to their passing. If those arrangements weren’t made the decision will be based on factors such as religious or spiritual beliefs, finances, or ecological awareness. If you decide on going with a cremation service, we recommend:

1

Plan The Ceremony. There are different options for ceremonies. Some people opt for a traditional funeral with cremation taking place after. If you prefer, the ceremony can be delayed so you can take the time to plan a memorial service or ash scattering ceremony.

2

Get Support from Family and Friends. Having support during these difficult times can mean all the difference. It is a time to reconnect with family and friends, choose the location for the event, share stories, and process this life change with the people you love.

3

Gather the Materials You Wish to Include in The Ceremony. Take this time to select music, photographs, prayers, or other readings you wish to be included in the ceremony or reception. This is not required but can add a personal touch to the ceremony.

4

Announce The Ceremony. Contact your local print and online newspaper to publish an obituary and announce the location and date of the ceremony. Contact guests ahead of time who may need to make special arrangements for travel.

5

Decide on The Final Resting Place of The Cremated Remains. Most commonly, ashes will be placed in an urn and returned to the family. Do you plan on having a celebration of life ceremony? Will the ashes be split into keepsake urns for family members? Will the ashes be scattered?

Direct Cremation

If you wish for no viewing of the body, you may choose direct cremation. The direct cremation process involves completing all required paperwork and then transporting the deceased from the hospital, home, nursing facility, or coroner’s office to the ceremony.

Cremation Services FAQ

How long after death before we can cremate a family member?

Burial is reversible, cremation is not. We must be diligent about obtaining the proper paperwork before cremation can occur. We MUST have authorization from the legally identified next-of-kin and any necessary agencies such as the medical examiner. It may take 48-72 hours to obtain these documents. Your loved one will be held in a secure, refrigerated environment until then.

How much does cremation cost?

We are legally obligated to share our General Price List, or GPL, with you which details the actual cost of our cremation services. Those services include our basic professional services fee, the fee charged by the crematory for the use of their facilities, and any additional charges related to the transportation and safekeeping of the deceased before the cremation. Speak with us for more details on the General Price List.

Do I have to purchase an urn from you?

In short, no. The FTC’s Funeral Rule guides funeral directors in the ethical and fair presentation of funeral service options which means we cannot make you purchase an urn (or casket) from us. We will not charge you an extra fee for purchasing from a third party nor do we ask that you be present for its delivery to the funeral home.

What should I do with my loved one’s ashes?

We will never advise you on what you should do as there is no right answer. Take your time to come to a decision and when you are ready we will be here to help. Take the ashes home, scatter them, or put them in keepsake jewelry, the decision is up to you. If you need guidance, we’re happy to share options with you.

If we choose cremation, is embalming required?

Per the FTC’s Funeral Rule, we cannot provide embalming services without your permission and may not lead you to believe embalming is required by law. If you wish to have a viewing or a visitation it is generally a good idea to embalm to have the deceased look their best. We must provide you with written disclosures about the embalming of your loved one.

How long does cremation take?

This answer varies depending on what type of cremator will be used and how large the person is. Generally, the process takes 2 – 2 1/2 hours with a cool-down period following. The cremated remains are then processed for a uniform appearance. Please speak with us if this is an important matter to you.

Are special items allowed in their cremation casket?

We will do our best to accommodate any special item requests. Items like notes, children’s drawings, or other small tokens of love are acceptable. Contact us to ask about specific special items.
